Have you ever met (even if it’s just on insta 🤣 ) someone and been completely astonished by their strength? That’s how we feel about her! In this episode, Julia takes us through her youngest daughter Kiyas diagnosis with Hypotonia (a condition that causes very low muscle tone ). She gives us a glimpse of a day in her life, shares some of the incredible, yet challenging, times that come with raising a child that has additional needs, and talks about the importance of acknowledging people with additional needs in public. Come chat with us, and share in some good laughs over how kids say the cutest, most forthright things! Link to listen is in our bio!
Proud Mum Moment 💕 With the help of his new school Connor today went into school and did a maths lesson. Connor has not been able to do this for such a long time due to his #autism and #anxiety And it was amazing to see him engage with the teacher and enjoy his lesson. I am so very very proud of him.

Hey ladies, I felt called to conduct this next Intuitive Guidance Session on Youtube for a lovely mother who is currently experiencing feelings of jealousy & resentment towards her best friend after her own son was born prematurely and then diagnosed with having a disability. Her feelings are bought on because her best friend had a baby at a similar time, yet seemingly she has had a smooth ride so far. She reached out to me to ask for some guidance and support as to how to move forward wth her friend whom she loves dearly.. To watch this session, pls visit my Youtube channel (link in bio ) & watch my latest video. Darrielle x

Excited to finally be getting back to school today 🙌🎒🚌🏫📝📚 ... Makaton signing "school" and making the sound 'ool' also Makaton signing "friends". No sign prompts needed, all his own effort! 💙🤩🥰 Since starting school we have seen Jax's signing and attempts at making new sounds increase. He has in the last few weeks begun to shape his mouth to make the 'o', 'ooh' and 'ool' sounds which has helped him with the words 'school' and his all time favourite ... 'NO' 🤣 He is working so super hard and it is so amazing to see more progress recently! Speech and language is one of the main challenges for children with Down Syndrome for many reasons, one being low muscle tone (hypotonia ) which affects feeding as well as speech. Although most children with Down Syndrome learn to speak and will use speech as their primary means of communication, they understand language and have the desire to communicate well before being able to speak. Jaxon understands so much and it is something that troubles me greatly that he has so much to say that he is currently unable to voice, must be so frustrating for him, but also knowing we are doing all we can to help bridge the gap in the meantime and that he is being given the best tools to help him communicate. Makaton sign is so important for this! #iamjaxonjude #jaxonjude #backtoschool #Makaton #Makatonsign #signlanguage #school #friends #communication #inclusion #additionalneeds #SEN #ourhero #truewarrior #phighter #showingushowitsdone #lifesgreatestteacher #comealongway #downsyndromeawareness #downsyndrome #DS #trisomy21 #T21 #extrachromosome #wouldntchangeathing #theluckyfew #love

Did you know that all students who are in out of home care or who are funded under Programs for Students with Disabilities (PSD ) are required to have a Student Support Group (SSG ) every term? Student Support Group (SSG ) meetings are basically a more in-depth Parent/Teacher interview where individual goals are set to ensure students individual needs are catered for in the classroom and wider school community. I can remember a time when my children were little that I was their entire world and that was so great because the feeling was mutual. Then along cane the turbulent teenage years and there were times when I wasn’t even allowed to be part of their world and, boy, did they let me know! However, like most parents out there I held strong, determined to make sure I would do everything in my power (super or not ) to help them become the kind of adults who could take their place in the world and make a positive contribution! Are we there yet? The short answer is that I’m proud... I’m proud of the way I did manage to hold my nerve, keep my sanity as well as the lessons I’ve learnt and taught along the way! And yes, they’ve not turned out so badly after all!🙂 Does that resonate with you? Or has it been different for you? Feel free to comment! Secondly, if you are in need of some inspiration or support right now, know that you can get in touch via Messenger or come and join my ‘Ask Lyn ...’ group embedded in my FB page (RedKite Coaching Solutions ) where you’ll find like-minded people, mainly parents, and you’ll be able to air/share your concerns and/or ideas in a space that’s inclusive and non-judgemental. Thirdly, I’m here and ready to be of service to you and remember you don’t have to go it alone because we’re in this together!❤️(Link in bio ) #parenting #parentingadvice #advocacy #coaching #support #help #solutions #behaviour #challengingbehaviour #behaviouralproblems #additionalneeds #specialneeds #neurodiversity #SEND #neurodivergent #onthespectrum #ADHD #liketofidget #cantsitstill #ASD #autism #autismawareness #autismacceptance #selfworth #selfesteem #partnership #education #school #college #lifelonglearning

Looking a bit dishevelled with two kids hanging off me? That’s the way I roll these days 😆 Which is why I’m pretty excited (although I don’t look it in this photo 😉 ) at the prospect of dressing up and going out to not one but two awards ceremonies this year. I hate asking for favours but I’ve been lucky enough to be nominated and shortlisted in the travel categories for two separate awards and they both rely on public votes 😬 The latest one is the #madblogawards and the great thing is that it isn’t just for SEND bloggers so it's brilliant to be representing SEND in the wider community. I'm in the Favourite Travel Influencer category, with, let's be honest, some HUGE bloggers so I need all the help I can get! Instagram isn’t the best platform for dropping links, but if you could copy and paste this link into your web browser https://www.tots100.co.uk/mad-awards-2020-vote-now/ I would love you forever ❤️ Scroll down to the travel category and choose A Curious Journey in the drop-down menu. The other awards I'm a finalist in is the SEND blogger awards - the #BAPSAwards - which stands for Bloody Awesome Parents (not my words ) and recognises bloggers spreading awareness of additional needs issues. Link is here https://www.myfamilyourneeds.co.uk/baps/travel-and-accessibility/ You can vote up to three times for me in the travel and accessibility category there. Thank you so much for your support 🙏 ♥️. Awards are a bit of fun but they also help to spread vital awareness when you’re talking about additional needs. Let me know if you vote in the comments below so I can say a huge thank you x
This is what 12 days of zeroing in on nutrition and crushing workouts looks like! I have had the blessing to have been walking alongside K since July and I am so stinkin’ proud of her and how much CONSISTENCY she has developed in that time. . K is doing a program that specifically focuses on core and booty. But honestly it works the whole body.... . I have done it 3 times now and it always makes me feel so strong and able to do all the ‘parenty’ stuff I have to do....like carry kids who are melting down out of Target. 😂😂😂 Can I point out something that Will prove that I am fitness geek? . Do you see how much higher K’s belly button is in the Feb pic? That’s because her entire abdominal area has tightened and strengthened so much that it is actually pulling her lower abdomen back up where it is supposed to be. Cool, right? . In 12 days! Holy cats! . This is what she said when I asked what she thought and how it was going. . “It's going awesome so far! I'm on day 12 I believe? And love it so far! Also took a progress photo and it's only been about 3 weeks and already seeing a difference! Already noticing less ‘sag’.” . Super proud of you, K and all your hard work!
💜 Post seizure recovery day 💜 Post seizure brain fog is a real thing! On days when it lands frozen shrimp in the dry pantry (like today ), or cutting boards and other odd things in the oven (on previous days ) we like to pause for a moment, laugh out loud and then find gratitude in the moment. Because, let's face it, Epilepsy can be hard! And when we're given moment like this, it's healthy and healing to let out the stress with a good laugh. Anyone else struggle with post seizure brain fog? Hayden and I would love to hear your stories.

Puzzles @melissaanddougtoys are my favourite puzzles! A puzzle has to be one of my all time favourite toys! It provides a great opportunity to do some quality work with children. There are so many things you can work on when completing a puzzle. Firstly, putting pieces in to an inset puzzle is a developmental stage, so a great thing to work on. When children first start doing puzzles they can be quite difficult, so it provides lots of opportunities for children to ask for help. Puzzles provide opportunities for turn taking, problem solving, social interactions and concentration.

I made them😍. The best bit for the gals about a McDonald’s, getting a balloon at the end, which they hold all of 5-10 minutes before it’s passed to me to keep a hold off😅. Today has been a good one, probably the first decent one in around 12 days! Long may it continue cause the past 12 days have legit took it out of me🤣!! Mummy was right! It was not a good day for Matthew today 🙁 I knew that him struggling to fall asleep last night then waking so early this morning wouldn’t be good for him. • When I arrived to collect him from nursery I could tell by the look on his teacher’s face. They are always polite and professional when they speak to me but I know part of them is thinking he was just misbehaving. He didn’t want to join in with the dance class which takes place in the big gym hall in the school next door. They split the class into little groups but Matthew just ran around then got “upset” at being asked to join in. • It’s tough, I feel like I can’t speak to Matthew about it because he has no idea what I’m talking about (something that happened 2 hours ago when I wasn’t with him ). I also appreciate the teachers are trying hard to include him but I wonder if it’s out of line to ask that they have plans in place to support Matthew when he’s not coping with the activity or simply having a bad day? 🤔 #speechtherapy #asd #autism #autismparent #autismawareness #autismsupport #SENparent #additionalneeds #speechdelay #sensoryprocessingdisorder #mumlife #mumofboys #owningautism #honestmotherhood #parenting #pnd #postnataldepression #anxiety #follow #instafamily #mentalhealth #familyof4 #instamum #boymum #mumssupportingmums #son #family #love #attachmentparenting

This week, we are going to be focusing a little on toilet training as we have been supporting many families with Toilet training and we regularly get a lot of questions about it. Our approach to Toilet training is systematic and effective and this months blog post is going through how we supported one little boy with toilet training. We hope you enjoy and if there's anything you would like us to cover in next months blog post, let us know. The link is in our bio.
🌈 I had a fun fun time working with the fantastic students and teachers of Scoil Eoin today! Thanks to the teachers who take the time to care for their wellbeing - when we care for others, especially those with additional needs, we rarely give time and attention to our own health. All change starts with us- any change you wish to see in your kids or students needs to be role modelled by you. Caring for you means you can care better for others. Self-care keeps you sustainable, attentive and energised. Ever sobbed through a workout before? Not because it’s hard but because LIFE is hard... I know some of you are going to relate to this...this for you special needs super mamas... The reality of it all just hit harder than it usually does lately...a comment by a kiddo...”why doesn’t _______ like us anymore?” You pass it off as ‘they’re busy’ or ‘life is crazy’ or some other excuse to pacify them...except it doesn’t... and it breaks your heart a little more each time you think about it.... Friendships that fade because it’s just too complicated to deal with a kid that might melt down or expose their kids to behaviors or words... It is in these quiet moments or sweat dripping workouts that bring up such emotion when I am reminded and so thankful for a community of people who get it.... who understand the isolation...who have endured their own seasons of feeling on the outside. Take a second to count up all those cheerleaders that live among us both in real life and virtually. If you aren’t a mama of a kiddo with extra needs thank you for reading this and thank you for giving us some grace, our kids some grace.
Its our Stay n Play for children with #AdditionalNeeds or #Disabilities this Thursday and we're in the Sensory Room at @LeedsMencap 1pm-2.30pm. Sensory Rooms are brilliant for helping to engage children's senses and help them interact with the world around them in a non-threatening space where they can explore at their own leisure.⠀ ⠀ #NoLimits
This ☝🏼 For those people who believe 'the child just needs a good slap, some proper discipline never did me any harm' Believe it or not, there are still people who believe their decisions and behaviour to be a considered choice. Today is #WorldPrematurityDay ... the 3rd one we’ve been a part of since our beautiful boy made his way into the lives. . He wasn’t ready for the world and the world wasn’t quite ready for him, but he clawed, scratched and fought his way through every single obstacle thrown his way. . I don’t know which ways up or down. Trying to access services for children with any developmental concerns is a little like this playground ride. You jump on all enthusiastic but before long you’re just going around in circles and getting nowhere. There’s no clear end game and no matter which direction you go in, you end up disorientated and confused. The system is well and truly broken. It no longer supports children, their parents or even the staff within the services themselves. All three are fighting to gain and keep diminishing services that are so infrequent they are no longer fit for purpose. And that’s if your child is fortunate enough to be granted access to the services they need, in an area with an availability in the first place. It’s a game of Russian roulette with the added bonus of a postcode lottery. Just to keep you on your toes. Now add an assessment of need or a diagnosis and watch it spin out of control. How exactly does it all work? If you have any queries or worries over your child’s development no matter how minor you contact your GP or PHN who then refer you to the necessary specialist within the primary care services. If any flags are raised here you get referred to an early intervention multidisciplinary team who then access your child and refer you to the designated service providers based on their findings and/or a diagnosis. This is the fun part! Your child is now no longer eligible for primary care services. They must join a new waitlist and await their faith. Add a completely over subscribed new service with no actual service provision available to new service users since 2017. But it’s ok because you now know beyond doubt, compliments of the diagnosis you’ve received, that your child absolutely needs Speech Language Therapy, or Occupational therapy or insert ‘all therapies' here. So you’ve just been spinning in circles for 3 years to find out you should have just sought out the services privately in the first place. (if they even exist locally ) As an educator, I know EARLY INTERVENTION is essential. I thought I knew the system. As a parent, I’ve learnt the system doesnt work and we’re running out of ways to access it!
I'm so nervous about this. It's the most honest post I've shared. It's no secret how I've struggled with giving up my career to be a Carer to Ella. I've talked lots of Iosing my identity. Being a Mother came natural to me, but losing the biggest part of my life pre motherhood - the mental health field is tough. My career gave me purpose, I was good at it - shit hot at it in fact. It boosted my self esteem and made me feel proud for the work I'd do. I thrived on saving lives, training staff and supporting people to recover from mental illness 🌾. . Do you notice anything about everything I've just said? It is positive, full of compliments and congratulations to myself. I watched a webinar today from @resetschooluk , Holly spoke about how we find it hard to give ourselves compliments and congratulate ourselves for what we're good at. I've become pretty great at reminding myself regularly what I'm not so good at. Worse, I've become splendid at self loathing, believing I have little to offer my friends and family and feeling as though I have nothing interesting to talk about. My life is a Carer Mum and I feel as though I have little substance these days. Naturally, this is having a huge impact on my confidence and self esteem and I'm a bit broken. I have fallen into a habit of being critical and harsh towards myself and I need to start working on it 🌾. . The webinar today inspired me to take control of this situation I've found myself in and prompted me to talk about what I'm good at, what makes me, me. This evening, my wonderful Wife gifted me this beautiful book and said "This is you in a book. You have depth, you have substance, this is you" 🌾. . So yeah, hi, I'm Claire.... (Okay, in full disclosure this is hard to find something )... I am a great home educator, I am confident in my approach and Ella is thriving educationally mostly because of ME. I have a huge range of diverse interests from nature and art to politics and education. I'm hungry for knowledge, self taught in almost everything I know and I'm a fantastic Mum 🌾. . I'd love to hear you compliment yourself, come and give it a go, it's harder than you think 🌾.

We have some really big appointments for Kiya this month. Her pediatrician hopefully has some genetic answers from when we did some tests (pray with us? ), She has a big assessment at KCC where she has physio, speech and OT every month to see where she is at and then we have a second appointment the following week with our whole team of people to discuss moving forward and how she is doing. My heart is heavy this season, I want to curl up in bed and never leave. I'm making it through the days with too much Netflix and a whole lot of coffee. I have a constant headache and I can feel my anxiety and depression coming full force. I don't tell you this for sympathy or pity. It's just real life. The non highlight real kinda stuff. The real, everyday, I struggle with mental health and being a parent to a special needs kid kinda stuff. It's a big month in our house. And I want to be present for it all. I want to be fully understanding what is happening and ask the right questions when it's time. So if you pray, please add me to your list for a day or a month. I could use some supernatural strength in this season. 💕 Also how cute is this kid. Golly gosh I just love her.
